Acupuncture

Here at Abbeymoor Vets, we now provide an acupuncture service. This is used to both complement our current practices and as an alternative medicine in the appropriate situations.

Acupuncture has evolved from the art of placing needles into special locations on the body, to alleviate pain and increase the recovery rate and resistance to disease. It is a system of healing that has been used in eastern cultures for thousands of years and can be used to treat many illnesses.

In the west, acupuncture is used predominately in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders and, in particular chronic pain in animals. Acupuncture can be used either as an alternative therapy or as an addition to more traditional veterinary treatments.

Behaviour Consults

Veterinary Behaviour Consults for dogs and cats are available with Nicola Jennings. Nicola has been seeing behaviour consults in practice for the last 5 years. After initially completing the 'Learn to Talk Dog' and 'Think Dog!' Intermediate and Advanced courses on dog behaviour and gaining a Diploma with distinction in 'Modifying Canine Aggression' from the Animal Care College, Nicola went on to gain ESVPS GP Certificate in Animal Behaviour in 2015.

Combining Veterinary investigation with behavioural investigation really helps with behavioural problems, as the ability to identify factors such as dietary intolerance, hormonal disease and chronic pain states are critical to managing many cases, especially those involving anxiety and aggression.

The consult comprises of an initial 60-90 minute consultation for history-taking and physical examination, followed by any medical tests. A further consultation is then planned a week later to discuss the behavioural modification plan and to demonstrate and practice training exercises. A written report is provided along with detailed instructions for training exercises. On-going telephone support and repeat consultations to assess progress are offered. If you would like further information on behaviour consults please contact either of our branches.

Client Reminders

Where vaccinations require regular boosters we aim to send reminders to our clients at an appropriate time prior to the due date.

If you wish, we can provide specific reminders for your pet across a range of services:

  • Worming
  • Flea treatment
  • Dental checks
  • Weight checks
  • Diet orders and checks

Dental Health

Dental disease is one of the most common problems with adult and older animals. Decayed teeth and infected gums can trigger kidney and heart disease, not to mention mouth pain for your pet. Tooth brushing significantly reduces the occurrence and helps keep your pet's mouth healthy. Kits are available from the surgery and advice on how to start can be obtained from our nurses. Training your pet to accept brushing as part of their routine takes patience and you should always introduce this slowly and reward good behaviour. Make it fun and enjoy the time spent together!

Dental diets are also available; they are formulated to help maintain dental health when brushing isn't possible. Our veterinary nurses can help you with the ongoing care of your pet's teeth.

We also recommend rawhide chews to encourage your pet to chew more, which can also help with dental health. Dentaflex can be fed as part of a balanced diet.

General Health

Regular health checks are the cornerstone to keeping your pet healthy and comfortable. We recommend you arrange for an annual health check for all animals, with a booster vaccination for all dogs, cats and rabbits.

This annual health check can be considered your pet's MOT. It includes a full physical examination, a dental check-up, weighing and discussing your pet's diet and parasite control (fleaing and worming). We will also be happy to discuss any other aspect of your pet's health care that may be concerning you.

Members of our Pet Health Club recieve a health check every 6 months included in the plan! Click here to see all the benefits of becoming a member.

Home Visits

We will always aim to provide home visits where necessary and when circumstances require such a service. This can be especially so when a patient has reached the end and that final difficult decision has been made.
Please try to provide as much notice as possible when requesting a home visit so that we can accommodate your needs. Usually if you can let us know before 9am, we will try to visit that same day.

If transport is difficult for our clients, then we can often arrange for a pet ambulance service for the pet, which involves a non-veterinary surgeon coming to your home to collect the patient and deliver them home later in the day.

We recommend that if at all possible, you bring patients to our Halifax Road or Abbey Lane surgery where we can provide prompt attention and additional facilities and have staff available.

Nurse Clinics

Appointments with our qualified Veterinary Nurses are available most days.

Our qualified Veterinary Nurses are available to provide help on a wide range of subjects such as weight management, diet advice, dental clinics and arthritis management. They are able to advise you on any aspect of your pet's wellbeing.

Our Nurses will clip nails, remove sutures, insert microchips, change dressings and bandages and administer worming and flea treatments.

For any further information, please do not hesitate to contact your local practice to speak to one of our staff.

Parasite Control

We recommend year-round prevention of fleas and ticks for dogs and cats using topical spot-on or oral medications.

These are very safe and easy to use and much more effective than many pet shop preparations. We recommend routine worming of dogs and cats every 3 months.

We can provide advice on a range of products for your cats and dogs. To get in touch, either visit us at one of our practices, or contact us over the phone or by email. All of our contact information can be found by clicking here.

For more information about worming your dog or cat please visit www.wormpatrol.co.uk.

Pet Travel Scheme & Export of Pets

If you meet the rules of the UK Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), you can take your pet cat, dog or ferret abroad and return to the UK without the need for quarantine.

Before travelling, you must take your animal to a vet so that they can be:

  • Fitted with a microchip
  • Vaccinated against rabies
  • Issued with a pet passport (if they are travelling in the EU) or has a third country veterinary certificate

You must wait 21 days from the date of the rabies vaccination before travelling.

Dogs must also be treated by a vet for tapeworm, not less than 24 hours and not more than 120 hours before its scheduled time of entry into the UK.

Once these steps are carried out, you can travel to (and return from) most EU countries and some non-EU countries.

It can be time consuming and expensive to obtain a pet passport but the vets at our surgery are happy to explain the procedures and costs involved.

Further information can be found on the DEFRA website.

Surgical Operations

Operations take place Monday to Friday with admission appointments from 8:30am to 9:30am. Most patients are able to return home the same day. We strongly recommend the use of pre-operative blood testing to help minimise risks associated with anaesthesia and surgery.

We use the most up-to-date and safe anaesthetics, and all patients are given appropriate drugs to control pain. To make anaesthesia as safe as possible, all patients are monitored individually by a qualified veterinary nurse, using sophisticated electronic equipment when needed.

In many cases, sutures are buried underneath the skin thus avoiding suture removal and pets chewing out their stitches.

Patients can be prescribed further pain relieving medications to take at home where necessary. Most pets are re-examined by a vet or nurse 3-5 days after an operation.

Ultrasound

Our practice has an ultrasound machine which allows us to perform certain non-invasive internal examinations of your pet.

We are able to scan your dog or cat to check for pregnancies and to monitor the health of puppies and kittens during the pregnancy.
